about

A word from the curator and the informant:

Of all the shadowy government and government adjacent agencies that we may or may not be aware of, the ERA is a particularly peculiar one. In an age of surveillance when every aspect of our lives have been mapped to the data-sphere, where we have become more or less computational beings with identities boiled down to 1s and 0s, the idea of a top secret organization dedicated to listening at the fringes of our rapidly transforming planet may seem weird. The agency was seen as a tool for quantifying the last bits of human perception that remained elusive. The eyes have long been said to be the windows to the soul, but the ear is a more primitive, ancient, and occult organ. The agency was doomed from birth and has been regarded by many in power as one of the most expensive art projects to ‘never exist on paper’- in other words, an enormous waste of capital. I was approached by a confidential informant, a previously deactivated (and potentially fugitive) agent of ERA with what remained of a recovery drive pulled from some kind of larger agency repository. This informat, who goes by the alias Jack Nightingale, has revealed little to me beyond the existence of ERA and the details that I have already shared. In our correspondence Jack has conveyed that the fate of the agency and the status of its deep cover agents are currently unknown, as each cell operates in secrecy, sending audio logs back to a master “Phantom Codex”. We decided that the best way to share this audio intelligence with the world, for it to at once draw the least attention from authorities, but reach the most ears, was to release it as a music record. I have not heard from Jack in some time, and their own motives remain a mystery to me, but I await their next contact. — Grant Bouvier

Notes and errata available when recovery log was pulled from repo:

*Logs with dates and locations unlisted and not referenced in repository ERA codex are of unknown origin, potentially archival in nature, or produced from now fugitive agencies.

**Current field agent cohort captures incomplete as of 20xx, awaiting analog cataloging at satellite outposts.
